How to Calculate Fence Materials

The key formula for fence posts: Posts = (Total Length รท Post Spacing) + 1. Each section between two posts needs one panel, and each post needs 2 bags of concrete (50 lb) for a stable installation.

Important: Posts at corners and gate openings require extra posts. Our calculator automatically adds 2 extra posts per gate. Always add 10% extra materials for waste and mistakes.

Post Depth Guide

A fence post should be buried at least 1/3 of its total length underground. For a 6-foot fence, use 9-foot posts and bury 3 feet. For a 4-foot fence, use 6-foot posts and bury 2 feet. In frost-prone areas, posts must be buried below the frost line (usually 36โ€“48 inches deep).

Pro tip: Use fast-setting concrete (like Quikrete Fast-Setting) โ€” just pour it dry into the hole, add water, and it sets in 20โ€“40 minutes. No mixing required.
