How Much Gravel Do You Need?
Gravel is one of the most versatile landscaping materials — used for driveways, pathways, garden beds, drainage, and decorative areas. Getting the right amount saves money and prevents multiple trips to the supplier.
The formula: Cubic Yards = Length × Width × Depth (in inches) ÷ 324. Our calculator handles the math instantly and also converts to tons so you can order bulk deliveries accurately.
Rule of thumb: For pathways and decorative beds, use 2–3 inches of gravel. For driveways, use 4–6 inches of crushed stone base. For drainage, 6+ inches of coarse gravel works best.
Gravel Types Explained
Pea Gravel — Small, smooth, rounded stones (3/8 inch). Great for walkways, playgrounds, and garden borders. Comfortable underfoot, drains well, and looks attractive.
Crushed Stone — Angular, compacted gravel ideal for driveways and base layers. It locks together when compacted, providing a stable surface. #57 crushed stone is the most common size for driveways.
River Rock — Larger, smooth stones (1–3 inches). Used in dry creek beds, drainage channels, and as decorative ground cover around trees and shrubs.
Pro tip: Always order 10–15% more than your calculated amount to account for compaction, settling, and uneven areas. Returning extra is easier than making a second order.
